consulate in benghazi, libya. the attackers were muslim protesters apparently angry about an internet film produced in the united states that rid kulz the prophet muhammad. also among the four killed was sean smith, a foreign service information officer. the other two americans have not yet been identified because the state department is still notifying their families. cbs news national security correspondent david martin has been looking into all this at the pentagon. david? >> scott, good morning. u.s. officials do not believe these killings were the work of that mob that was demonstrating at the u.s. consulate. u.s. officials believe that within that mob, there were heavily armed militants who were, if you will, using the demonstration as a cover to get into that consulate and then take as much revenge as they could on americans. now, whether they were seeking revenge for this anti-muslim video or whether they were simply trying to kill americans on the anniversary of 9/11 is still unclear. >> david, thank you.

consulate in benghazi was destroyed by fire. charlie d'agata visited the embassy today and saw much of the destruction. charlie, what was it like inside the consulate? >> reporter: well, nora, the consulate was completedly decimated. and i have to start by saying this is not a heavily fortified compound. it wasn't even really a fortified compound, just a group of buildings on a residential street, iron gates in the front of it. and we were shown the guard shack which is the first building you come to. and that with the vehicles around it had been bombed out completely and then set on fire. you go about 30, 40 yards or so into it, and then the bigger building inside the consulate itself, and there is where the residence is and where the dining room area. and once again, completely gutted. there are two or three other buildings within that compound. again, completely destroyed. and then as you go across an alleyway, you get to an annex. and again, two other buildings were completely gutted. everything had been taken out. things we

benghazi is where the four americans were killed. >> reporter: there are important divisions between the united states and libya on the investigation of what exactly happened at the consulate and the safe house that night. the u.n. ambassador susan rice said it appears that the attacks were not premeditated. but that's not what we're hearing here. the president of the libyan national council said not only does it look like they were premeditated, but it may have taken months in the planning. what i can tell you is we saw plenty of evidence of heavy weapons at this safe house. mortars and other kinds of weapons that take a level of expertise to deploy that accurately. we've also seen new cell phone footage of what appears to be libyans removing the body of ambassador christopher stevens from the consulate that night. they don't seem to know who he is. they identify him as a foreigner. they believe that he is alive at the time. they're shouting out whether anybody knows first aid. and the young man who showed us that video says that ambassador stevens was then rushed to the hospital wh
